The Salton Sea was once a source of agricultural irrigation as well as a water playground for California’s rich and famous. But without inlet or outlet, its salinity has risen to more than twice that of the Pacific Ocean, resulting in loss of fish habitat, bird migration and tourism. The demise of the once luxurious resorts is symbolized by the abandoned easy chairs and the ruined automobile tire. Only the Great Egret remains as a reminder that if life is ever to return to this desolate place, it will have to be a different life. So too, we humans will need to live differently in order to remain on our threatened planet.
