Sadly, our hearts are not automatically warmed by the sight of others, sharing sunshine and memories on a park bench. Too often, we see their lives as unidimensional, as if being old is all that defines them. I don’t believe we are being intentionally unkind. But unless we know them personally, we pay little attention to them, never wondering what lives they have lived. It is almost a case of not seeing them at all. To reflect this, I’ve utilized the monochromatic, sketch-like look of raw umber in several of my canvases dealing with aging.
