“Bouillon” depicts lunchtime at the iconic art nouveau Parisian dining establishment. The scene presents a hodgepodge of opposing juxtapositions. Noisy, garish, jumbled, and intrusive, it is also tasteful, bright, colourful, and relentlessly charming. This painting squeezes these contradictions onto a single canvas in an attempt to re-create the barely-controlled chaos of the place, while at the same time doing justice to the refined details of wood, glass, and bronze.
