As we age, memory becomes paramount. Our short-term memory weakens and becomes the brunt of dark jokes among our peers. We focus increasingly on the memories we have retained and the memories we hope to leave behind. In “Lasting Friendship”, an older man watches pensively as two younger men play chess. Is it possible that he is remembering himself as a younger man?
