We might become impatient with an older woman, taking her time, choosing knowingly from a bunch of bananas at an outdoor market. Her age spots replicate the bruises on the fruit. But what more might we know about her? Do we stop to imagine how rich and full her life has been? If we asked, what stories of love and hardship would she share? A younger woman in the background, perhaps a figment of the older woman’s memory awaits her turn at the bananas, and at life.
